The gorge is named after the Masai word for the wild sissal plant, oldupai, which the first European explorers (prior to Louis Leakey, who would have known better) mispronounced as olduvai.

Today it's dust and wind and storm
But a million years ago
This whole land was green and lush
When the sparkling rivers flowed.

Many creatures made their home
In tree and lake and sky
Among the different kinds of apes
Were those who walked upright.
Who were these beings?
What were they feeling?

Oldupai, your secret's still unknown
Oldupai, ancient stones and ancient bones
Oldupai, the heritage we share
Oldupai, we will take care

Life was fierce and fearful
Without tusk or fang or claw
Surrounded by predators
Who were large and swift and strong
Crocodiles upon the lake
Leopards prowled the land
Yet some early hominids
Made tools with their own hands
What did they know?
How did they grow?

Oldupai, your secret's still unknown
Oldupai, ancient stones and ancient bones
Oldupai, the heritage we share
Oldupai, we will take care

The Oldupai PlantVolcanoes were active then
Ash and lava poured
The earth shook and shifted
Forming an arid gorge
Now we're digging through the dirt
For bits of quartz and bone
Seeking clues to our past
In our ancestral home
How did they live?
We search through the sieve

Oldupai, your secret's still unknown
Oldupai, ancient stones and ancient bones
Oldupai, the heritage we share
Oldupai, we will take care

Old Oldupai, old Oldupai, old Oldupai, old Oldupai
